Transamerica Storyline

One week before her sex-change operation, Bree receives a call from a 17-year-old identifying himself as her son from a college liaison. Bree's psychiatrist won't approve the surgery until Bree deals with this relationship, so Bree flies to New York City, bails the youth out of juvenile detention, and offers him a ride back to Los Angeles without disclosing that she is his father. Both her plans and his go awry, and as secrets will out, what might become a friendship (or more) founders. The lad's step-father, a sex-change support group, a peyote eater, a Navajo wrangler, and Bree's family all play their parts in this exploration of family, gender, and expectations.

Transamerica trivia

'Felicity Huffman' (qv) had to stay in character all day, while shooting. This included having to keep Bree's voice on so that she wouldn't lose it. If she turned it "off" she would lose the voice.
The initial idea for the screenplay occurred in a conversation between screenwriter/director 'Duncan Tucker' (qv) and intersex actress 'Katherine Connella' (qv). While discussing male/female perceptions, Connella shocked Tucker (they had been sharing a house for about four months at the time) with the revelation that she had been raised as a male.
'Felicity Huffman' (qv) had to finish shooting her scenes earlier than scheduled when she secured a role on _"Desperate Housewives" (2004)_ (qv).
'Felicity Huffman' (qv) nicknamed her prosthetic penis "Andy" during filming.
Not knowing the film would be such a success, most of the wardrobe and props were donated to charity and thrift stores after production wrapped.
