Finding Neverland Storyline
London, 1903: four lads, three women, and J.M. Barrie in the year he writes "Peter Pan." After one of his plays flops, Barrie meets four boys and their widowed mother in the park. During the next months, the child-like Barrie plays with the boys daily, and their imaginative games give him ideas for a play. Simultaneously, a friendship deepens with Sylvia, the lads' mother, to the chagrin of his wife Mary, with whom he spends little time (separate bedrooms), the widow's mother, and high society, which gossips about his attraction to the widow and to her sons. As Sylvia's health worsens, Barrie's ties to the boys strengthen and he must find a way to take his muse to Neverland.

Finding Neverland goofs
- DATE: The first scene of "Finding Neverland", is set in 1903, the opening night of James Barrie's play "Little Mary". The vehicle in which Mr & Mrs Snow arrive is a Rolls-Royce model 40/50 HP, also known as a "Silver Ghost". This is an anachronism. The Rolls-Royce company was formed in 1904, with production of the 40/50 HP started in 1907. Moreover, the car has a "Flying Lady" mascot on the radiator which was not designed by Charles Sykes until 1911. The specific car is identifiable from its registration number - BM 8794. It is chassis number 1979, which was delivered new on 10th May 1912. The car used to drive to the summer cottage is a Mitchell Tourer, made in Racine Wisconsin, USA. Although the Mitchell-Lewis Motor Company was founded in 1903, the model in the film appears to be about 1911, judging by the shape and style of the lettering on the radiator. It's certainly no earlier than 1910.
- CREW: When Peter is knocking over his set for his play, a man in a t-shirt, blue jeans and a baseball cap is reflected in the window.
- FACT: When preparing to leave for the play, it appears that there is a ticket for each member of the family, but when Peter arrives at the play alone, his seat is the only one open in the row.
- CONT: When Barrie is rebuffing Peter for saying Porthos is just a dog, the stuffed toys behind Peter change orientation in relation to Peter at least twice.
- FACT: There was much literary license taken regarding Barrie and his relationships with key characters. He and his wife didn't divorce until several years after the film's time period. Also, Sylvia's husband didn't die several years after the film; Sylvia didn't until 1910, six years after the Peter Pan premiere. Barrie knew the boys for several years before their apparent first meeting.
Finding Neverland quotes
- Peter Llewelyn Davies: This is absurd. It's just a dog.
J.M. Barrie: Just a dog? *Just*? [to Porthos] Porthos, don't listen! [to Peter] Porthos dreams of being a bear, and you want to shatter those dreams by saying he's *just* a dog? What a horrible candle-snuffing word. That's like saying, "He can't climb that mountain, he's just a man", or "That's not a diamond, it's just a rock." Just. - J.M. Barrie: [gives him a journal] Here you go.
Peter Llewelyn Davies: What's this?
J.M. Barrie: All great writers begin with a good leather binding and a respectable title. Open it.
Peter Llewelyn Davies: [reads] "The Boy Castaways: Being a record of the terrible adventures of the brothers Davies, faithfully set forth by Peter Llewelyn Davies."
J.M. Barrie: Kipling would swallow his own ear for a title like that!
Peter Llewelyn Davies: I still have no idea what to write.
J.M. Barrie: Write about anything. Write about your family, write about the talking whale!
Peter Llewelyn Davies: What whale?
J.M. Barrie: The one that's trapped in your imagination and desperate to get out. - J.M. Barrie: How are you?
Mary Ansell Barrie: I'm all right. How are you?
J.M. Barrie: I'm sorry.
Mary Ansell Barrie: Don't be. - Charles Frohman: [talking about plans for Peter Pan]... And you have a pirate ship on stage, surrounded by tons and tons of water, James, that's a lot of water.
J.M. Barrie: It's a lot of water?
Charles Frohman: Yes, and that's a lot of money. - Michael Llewelyn Davies: Excuse me, sir, you're standing on my sleeve.
J.M. Barrie: [moves his foot and looks down to face Michael] Am I? So sorry. I might point out you're lying under my bench.
