2010 Storyline

In the year 2001, Dave Bowman was taken by the Jupiter monolith and transformed into a powerful being. Now, in the year 2010, Dr. Heywood Floyd, the man held responsible for Discovery's failure, is going to Jupiter. He and his crewmates must reactivate the psychotic HAL-9000 computer, so they may learn what happened, and they must find out the meaning of Dave Bowman's last transmission... "My God, it's full of stars..."

2010 trivia

The voice of the SAL 9000 computer was actually performed by 'Candice Bergen' (qv), though the role was credited to "Olga Mallsnerd," a pseudonym combining the surname of Bergen's spouse (director 'Louis Malle' (qv)) and that of Mortimer Snerd, one of her father (ventriloquist 'Edgar Bergen' (qv))'s famous puppet characters.
The Russian space station Sergei Kirov (which is mentioned as having destroyed an American satellite) was named for an early Bolshevik leader, one of the first to be killed in 'Joseph Stalin' (qv)'s "Great Purges".
A pod which Max takes for his ride to the Monolith has a Russian word "GRAMPI" written on it. This word is a Russian transliteration of English word "GRUMPY". In Russian the correct word would be "SERDITY".
The Russian spaceship 'Aleksei Leonov (I)' (qv) was named for the cosmonaut who was the first man to perform an extravehicular activity (spacewalk).
The blue spacesuit on the Discovery (the only one that was never used, in either _2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)_ (qv) or _2010 (1984)_ (qv)) was later used in the _"Babylon 5" (1994)_ (qv) episodes "Babylon Squared" and "War Without End."
